Anxiety can be useful sometimes and the anxiety response is still essential for human survival! When your fight flight or freeze response is triggered it is essentially your powerful subconscious mind telling you: “Something dangerous is happening, something is not quite right, get out of danger!“
How your subconscious mind helps you when danger is near!
The Amygdala (part of your brain) releases cortisol and adrenaline into the bloodstream. Adrenaline then fuels all the major muscles in the body to give you a huge boost of energy to get out of that perceived danger your subconscious has picked up on. While this is happening only your major organs will continue to function properly this includes heart, lungs, and brain. All other organs such as the digestive system temporarily stop working, this is why you lose appetite, have difficulty swallowing and problems at the “other end” of the digestive system. Sound similar to some of your anxiety symptoms?
What is absolutely amazing is from seeing the perceived danger to all those responses happening it takes MILLISECONDS! Can you imagine if you didn’t have this protective system? Your life would become very dangerous!
The constraints of modern society have removed the traditional dangers we have evolved along with such as predators, avoiding poisonous animals and plants etc. Work deadlines, relationships, social media and body image etc have now replaced this.
Your subconscious still has this amazing protective system built into your body with one “flaw”
Your subconscious is unable to tell the difference between your imagination and “reality”. It cannot analyse or criticize or apply logic, that’s what your consciousness is for! Imagine watching a scary movie, you are consciously aware it’s just acting and fake blood. On the other hand, your subconscious part is unable to apply this logic, so it reacts as if its real! Your heartbeat will increase, perhaps you will then check the doors are locked? Switch on the lights on your way to bed? Run up the stairs for fear someone is chasing you?
This is essentially how anxiety is formed, your subconscious is having a powerful reaction to situations it does not like. The physical reactions are your body’s way of telling you to “get out of that situation”.
The most common types of anxiety:
Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
You will feel anxious on most days, worrying about lots of different things. This will reoccur for about 6 months or more. You may always expect disaster and can’t stop worrying about things such as health, money, family, work etc.
Is an intense fear of being criticised, embarrassed or humiliated during social situations. This can occur even in everyday situations such as eating in public, making small talk or even being assertive in the workplace.
You will become very fearful about a particular object or situation, going to great lengths to avoid it, for example, avoiding travelling on a plane or avoiding any situation that involves heights. There are many different types of phobias, but all are curable!
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
You will be having ongoing intrusive thoughts and fears that will cause you anxiety. Often you will even acknowledge the thoughts you have are unreasonable but you often try to relieve your anxiety by carrying out certain behaviours or rituals. One of the most common is the constant washing of hands, clothes and the home for fear of germ contamination.
Post-traumatic stress disorder
Traumatic life events, for example, being involved in a war, experiencing an assault, an accident or a natural disaster can result in PTSD. You may experience difficulty in relaxing, upsetting dreams or flashback of the event and avoidance of anything relating to that event. If you experience symptoms for 4 months or more you may be diagnosed with PTSD.
This is where you may experience panic attacks. Panic attacks are very intense, overwhelming and often thought of as uncontrollable. Your symptoms are a wide range of anxieties and physical symptoms combined, for example, shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness and excessive perspiration, very similar to having a heart attack! You may even believe you are having a heart attack or dying! The Subconscious cannot tell the difference between what is an imagined threat and what is a “real” threat so to you, whatever the threat is, itis real and can be very frightening.
There are many times in your life where you will feel fed up, tired and really at a loss, and you can normally deal with these feelings quite easily. However, sometimes those feelings seem to “hang on” causing us to feel isolated, unwanted, tired, and generally feeling “run down”.
This is because your immune system becomes inefficient, sometimes you can get mouth ulcers and cold sores etc. Does it feel like the spark has gone out of your life and you find your daily tasks very difficult to cope with? This can go on for months! This feeling of “flatness” seems to get worse and worse as time goes on and spirals into deep depression.
We have placed Anxiety and Depression together, not because they are the same, because people often experience both at the same time. One can cause the other.
Anxiety and Depression may have similar symptoms that can cross over into each other such as nervousness, irritability, and problems sleeping and concentrating. Anxiety and Depression have their own causes and their own emotional and behavioural symptoms. Many people who develop depression may have had an anxiety disorder earlier in life.
